Food Tech Curriculum Overview

The grid below gives an overview of the curriculum for this academic year:

Year 7

In the first three years of secondary school, students are given the opportunity to understand and apply the principles of nutrition and health. They follow a programme that introduces them to the function of ingredients and enables them to cook a repertoire of predominantly savoury dishes so that they are able to feed themselves and others a healthy and varied diet.

The aim is for them to become competent in a range of cooking techniques, for example: selecting and preparing ingredients; using utensils and electrical equipment safely; applying heat in different ways; using awareness of taste, texture and smell to decide how to season dishes and combine ingredients; adapting and using their own recipes.

Students begin GCSE preparation in Year 9. Skills from Year 7 and Year 8 are further developed with a focus on international food, social, moral and ethical food choices, cultural issues, and the science behind food.  Opportunities for students to modify and adapt recipes to suit different needs are encouraged.

Year 8

Year 9

Year 10

In Year 10 students are introduced to the WJEC Eduqas GCSE in Food Preparation and Nutrition specification. The principle aim is to equip students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to cook and apply the principles of food science, nutrition and healthy eating. It encourages learners to cook, enables them to make informed decisions about food and nutrition and allows them to acquire knowledge in order to be able to feed themselves and others affordably and nutritiously, now and later in life. During Year 11 students complete three assessments; The Food investigation, the food preparation assessment and a 1 hour 45min written assessment.

Knowledge and skills are taught through a wide variety of practical and theory lessons. We also arrange for specialist chefs, butchers and caterers to come in and impart their expertise. Students receive 5 lessons every 2 weeks.

Year 10 students are introduced to food preparation and nutrition through a series of practical and theory lessons.

Year 11

During Year 11 students focus completely on their practical controlled assessment tasks and prepare for the written exam paper.
