"Creativity takes courage" - Henri Matisse

At The Ramsey Academy, our Art curriculum is built on the belief that we achieve excellence together. It fosters curiosity, creativity, and confidence, enabling students to explore and respond thoughtfully to the world around them. We are committed to ensuring that every learner thrives in an inclusive, supportive, and creatively ambitious environment.

Our curriculum develops essential skills that support learning across the wider curriculum, contributing to pupils’ cognitive, emotional, and social development. Through engagement with a diverse range of artists, cultures, and ideas, students develop an appreciation of different perspectives and a deeper understanding of society. Art encourages pupils to question meaning, purpose, and communication, promoting critical thinking and thoughtful interpretation.

What pupils will know:

  • Key artistic concepts such as line, tone, colour, composition, and form
  • How artists, craftspeople, and designers work across different cultures and time periods
  • A range of materials, techniques, and processes including drawing, painting, printmaking, and mixed media
  • That creative processes require control and coordination, developing fine motor skills

What pupils will understand:

  • How and why art communicates meaning, ideas, and messages
  • That art reflects identity, culture, and society, both historically and in contemporary contexts
  • That creativity involves experimentation, decision-making, and refinement rather than fixed answers
  • That discussing art develops vocabulary, communication skills, and confidence

What pupils will be able to do:

  • Create personal responses informed by artist research
  • Adapt and refine ideas when challenges arise
  • Justify creative decisions through annotation and critique

Through Art, pupils develop visual literacy, resilience, and critical thinking. They become confident in expressing themselves, interpreting the world around them, and understanding the power of visual communication. Engagement with creativity and culture supports positive wellbeing, fosters a sense of connection, and enhances motivation across all ages and abilities.

These transferable skills enable success across the curriculum and prepare students for a wide range of future pathways, both within the creative industries and beyond.
