At the Ramsey Academy, our Technology curriculum reflects our belief in achieving excellence together. Through an academically rigorous, creative and practically ambitious approach, we ensure that all students are empowered to know, understand and do more as they design, experiment and create within ceramics, 3D design and textiles.

We believe Technology subjects are a vital component of a broad and balanced curriculum. They equip students with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to thrive in an increasingly technological and rapidly evolving world. Through engaging with design, materials and processes, students develop practical problem-solving abilities, creativity and innovation — all of which are essential for future education, employment and everyday life. Technology enables learners to apply knowledge across disciplines, bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world application, while also fostering independence, adaptability and resilience.

Our Technology curriculum is deliberately broad, balanced and inclusive, carefully sequenced from Key Stage 3 through to Key Stage 4. It supports and challenges all students in mastering each discipline we offer, achieving to the best of their ability, regardless of their background. Through engaging, hands-on learning experiences, students develop confidence, resilience and independence while learning to think creatively and solve real-world problems.

In every unit, students are provided with an ambitious, knowledge-rich experience that goes beyond the National Curriculum in its depth. Lessons are designed to build on prior knowledge and retain key threshold concepts, including materials science, construction techniques, aesthetics, functionality, sustainability and design thinking. Students develop both practical expertise and critical understanding — learning how products are made, why design decisions matter, and how technology impacts daily life and the wider world.

Through ceramics and 3D design, students explore form, structure, proportion, surface decoration and material properties. Through textiles, students develop understanding of fibres, fabrics, construction techniques and sustainable production. Across all areas, students learn to investigate, generate, develop, model, test and refine ideas. They critique, evaluate and improve their work and the work of others using subject-specific vocabulary and accomplished visual communication.

Our curriculum fosters independent, resilient learners who embrace challenge, take creative risks and understand that perseverance leads to mastery. Students are encouraged to experiment, refine and evaluate their ideas, developing fluency in practical skills alongside analytical thinking. They become reflective designers who can articulate their intentions and justify their decisions with confidence.

Technology makes a vital contribution to students’ wider development. By examining historical and contemporary designers, global traditions in craft, and the environmental and ethical implications of production, students gain a deeper appreciation of how design shapes cultures, communities and economies. They learn to consider user needs, moral responsibility and sustainability — developing as confident, culturally enriched individuals with the character and employability skills needed for future success.

Learning is carefully sequenced to ensure progression over time. At Key Stage 3, students build foundational knowledge and practical competence through structured, skill-based projects. These experiences prepare them for greater independence and specialisation at Key Stage 4, where they apply and refine their knowledge in more complex and sustained design challenges. Assessment focuses on identifying and investigating design possibilities, developing and making high-quality outcomes, and analysing and evaluating processes and products.

Key Stage 3

Within Year 7, 8 and 9 students undertake a design and make project in Design and Technology Product Design over a series of one-hour lessons. Students are taught how to respond creatively to a Design brief in order to solve problems. Students are always encouraged to respond to the Design problems with original, creative and exciting ideas, which allow them to choose the best processes, tools and techniques for manufacturing them. Throughout each project, the students are introduced to different methods as well as taught to analyse, evaluate and suggest improvements for their ideas.

Key Stage 4 – AQA

At GCSE level students are introduced to the AQA Design and Technology specification. Within this, subject students acquire knowledge and understanding of the working characteristics of materials and manufacturing processes, while being encouraged to utilise this when designing and manufacturing products. Our GCSE allows students to study core Technical, Designing and Making principles including a broad range of design processes, materials techniques and equipment. They will also have the opportunity to study specialist technical principles in greater depth.
