Food Technology
"Practice makes a skilled cook, effort gives the rise to success"
At The Ramsey Academy, our Food Technology curriculum is rooted in our commitment to achieving excellence together. We provide a broad, balanced and inclusive learning experience that empowers all students to develop essential practical skills, deepen their understanding of nutrition and food science, and master the principles needed to make informed choices about food in everyday life. Carefully sequenced from Key Stage 3 onwards, the curriculum supports and challenges students of all abilities, enabling them to achieve their best regardless of their background.
Food Technology offers students an ambitious, knowledge‑rich journey that extends beyond the National Curriculum in both depth and application. Lessons are designed to help students build on prior knowledge, secure threshold concepts such as nutrition, food safety, food science and cooking methods, and progressively refine the technical skills needed to know, understand and expand on their ability. Through hands‑on practical work and theoretical study, students become independent, resilient learners who demonstrate creativity, precision, and a developing love of learning in the professional kitchen.
Our curriculum equips students with the knowledge and skills required for further study at post‑16, including hospitality, catering, food science, and health‑related subjects. Students gain the confidence and cultural awareness needed to engage with food in a global society, enabling culturally enriched individuals who understand sustainability, ethical food choices, and the impact of food on personal and community wellbeing. These experiences build the character and employability skills essential for success in future education and the workplace.
We believe that through our progressive and practical Food Technology curriculum, students will thrive and achieve high standards:
- Academically – through mastering key concepts, developing technical proficiency, and demonstrating understanding in both written and practical assessments
- Personally – through teamwork, safe and responsible kitchen practice, and respect for ingredients, equipment, and the environment
- Socially – through learning about global cuisines, sustainable food systems, and their role as responsible contributors to their community and wider society
Our intention is for every student to leave Food Technology with the confidence, competence, and creativity to make informed decisions about food—and with a lifelong appreciation for cooking, nutrition, and healthy living.
