"We realise the importance of our voices only when we are silenced"
At The Ramsey Academy, we believe in achieving excellence together through a broad, ambitious English curriculum that is supportive and challenging for all students, regardless of their background. Therefore, we recognise that the study of English is fundamental to helping students understand the world around them, question it critically, and find their place within it.
We nurture independent learners who develop fluency in reading, writing and oracy, enabling them to know, understand and do more. Through our knowledge-rich curriculum, students engage with diverse, challenging and thought-provoking texts that reflect our inclusive society and deepen their understanding of the Universal Human Experience. In doing so, they learn not only to comprehend ideas, but to question perspectives, recognise bias, and explore how language shapes meaning and power.
By exploring powerful ideas, moral questions and a wide range of voices, students become culturally enriched, empathetic and reflective individuals. These elements empower students to consider whose voices are heard and whose are silenced, encouraging them to think critically about justice, identity and human experience across time and place. In this way, students are well equipped to navigate and contribute to a diverse and ever-changing world.
Our progressive curriculum ensures key threshold concepts are explicitly taught and embedded, strengthening literary knowledge and ambitious vocabulary. Reading and writing are woven throughout learning, enabling learners to develop their fluency in communication, to analyse critically, articulate ideas with clarity, and challenge, interpret and respond thoughtfully to the world around them.
Our English curriculum develops confident, capable readers, writers and speakers who gain the knowledge, vocabulary and skills needed to succeed in school and beyond. As students learn to interpret the world, articulate ideas and viewpoints, and understand the experiences of others, they become active participants in society. Our structured, supportive and ambitious teaching ensures that gaps are closed and that all learners can access challenging texts and complex ideas, empowering every student to find and use their voice.
Through this approach, students grow in literacy, confidence and knowledge, enabling them to participate successfully in further education, employment and wider society. Ultimately, they are prepared not only to thrive academically and personally, but to think critically, engage meaningfully, and contribute thoughtfully to the human story.
