At The Ramsey Academy, our History curriculum reflects our belief in achieving excellence together. Through a broad, balanced and inclusive programme, carefully sequenced from Year 7 to Year 11, we provide students with a secure, knowledge-rich understanding of the past that enables them to know, understand and do more. Our curriculum enables every learner to thrive, regardless of their background, and helps students to make sense of the world they live in by understanding how it has been shaped over time.

Our curriculum is rooted in a clear chronological framework and explores local, national and global histories, helping students to identify patterns of change and continuity. Through studying themes such as conflict, migration, power, community and identity, students develop a strong understanding of how societies evolve and how the past continues to shape modern British values and culture. A key part of this is recognising that History is not fixed, but is constructed through the interpretation of evidence, and students learn to question how and why the past is represented in different ways.

We support and challenge all students, regardless of their starting points, to think critically by analysing evidence, questioning interpretations and forming well-reasoned arguments. In doing so, History develops students’ ability to evaluate information, recognise bias and engage with different perspectives — skills that are essential beyond the classroom. We also value learning on location and provide opportunities for students to experience history where it happened, bringing learning to life and deepening cultural understanding.

Our History curriculum prepares students for further study at post-16 and beyond. By engaging with the experiences of people in the past, students develop perspective, empathy and a clearer sense of their place in the world, enabling them to become informed, thoughtful and active members of their community. Ultimately, we aim to foster a lifelong love of learning.
