  • E – Exceptional
  • SS – Strong Standard
  • ES – Expected Standard
  • NA – Needs Attention
  • UI – Urgent Improvement

How do staff decide on the grade given to my child on their report?

Staff use the following descriptors when deciding which grade to award a student for their behaviour for learning and homework:

Behaviour for Learning

Homework

Exceptional

Your child is excelling in their approach to learning, showing maturity, initiative, and a genuine passion for improvement. Their teachers recognise them as a standout learner in both behaviour and attitude. This reflects their hard work and strong personal values.

Your child completes all homework on time and to a very high standard, showing excellent discipline and a desire to achieve. They are highly responsible and self-motivated. Their homework has supported strong progress within the subject.

Strong Standard

Your child maintains a positive and responsible attitude towards schoolwork and classroom expectations. Teachers find them reliable and engaged. Their approach supports steady academic development.

Your child shows a consistent and responsible approach to homework. They have met deadlines and produced successful work. This has supported their academic development effectively within the subject.

Expected Standard

Your child is meeting the expected standard but requires encouragement to stay consistently focused and motivated. They are motivated to learn, but don’t always fully apply themselves. They can achieve more highly and therefore require support to reach their full potential.

Your child is meeting basic expectations for homework. They could improve in quality, consistency, and/or timeliness. We believe they are capable of more with the right support in creating learning routines at home that will impact positively on the progress they are making.

Needs Attention

Your child’s current approach is a concern and may be limiting their progress. They need to make improvements in sustaining their focus and motivation, taking a greater degree of responsibility towards their learning. We encourage you to work with us to support a positive change.

Your child is not completing homework reliably and/or in a timely manner, which is impacting their progress. Following parental intervention, we look forward to seeing improved homework outcomes moving forward.

Urgent Improvement

Your child’s behaviour for learning requires urgent attention and intervention. Their current conduct is affecting their progress and that of other students within the classroom they are taught in. A coordinated approach between home and school is necessary to address the issues.

Your child is consistently failing to complete homework, and this is a serious concern. It is affecting their learning and is impacting their progress and subject performance level. We strongly recommend working with the school to implement immediate changes, such as the creation of stronger learning routines at home and/or attending in-school homework support.

What does my child’s attendance mean?

Attendance refers to the record of a student being present at school during scheduled school days and hours. Regular attendance helps students build routines, stay engaged with learning, develop responsibility, and is directly linked to academic achievement, social development, and emotional wellbeing. According to the Department for Education, year 11 pupils with near-perfect attendance are almost twice as likely to achieve grade 5 in their English and Maths GCSE, compared to similar pupils attending between 90-95% of the time. An attendance of 97% or above is considered good.

How are end of year targets set?

Your child’s end of year target is set based on their KS2 scaled scores. We use a flightpath system to ensure that every student has made better than expected progress by the end of Year 11. A copy of the flightpath can be found below:

What does the + or – sign mean next to some of my child’s grades?

At The Ramsey Academy, we use fine grading to indicate our confidence level in a child’s attainment. A ‘+’ next to your child’s grade demonstrates the staff member believes your child is very secure in the grade and could reach the next grade with some intervention. The ‘–‘ symbol indicates your child is not secure in the grade yet. If no symbol is published, your child is secure in that grade but could become very secure with some intervention.

What is meant by the term ‘current grade’?

This is the grade your child is working at right now, based on recent classwork, homework, tests, and assessments. It reflects what they are currently able to achieve independently, using the knowledge and skills they’ve learned so far.

What is meant by the term ‘predicted grade’?

This is the grade the teacher believes your child is likely to achieve by the end of the course (e.g. at the end of Year 11), if they continue to work at their current pace. It takes into account their potential, effort, attitude to learning, and progress over time and is based on the teacher’s professional judgement. It will include previous performance or mock exam results.
